Un deposito di ceramica dell'età del Ferro in Oderzo. Panoramica tecnica e prospettive di ricerca

Abstract

Archaeological excavations were carried out in the stadium, in the north-western area of Opitergium, the ancient Oderzo (Treviso, north-eastern Italy). The 2001-2003 campaigns brought to light a few buildings and streets attributable to the X-IX centuries BC. They lie close to the artisans’ workshop area, where also the furnaces studied in 1988 are located. A ceramic assemblage of unique interest was found in the filling of a wide pit. It is composed of some 280,000 potsherds, which had been slowly stored since the middle of the VIII until the VI century B.C. It yielded both selected ceramic potsherds of different size, and complete vessels. The analysis of the pottery assemblage, which has already been started from an archaeometrical point of view, is of major importance because of its great technological informative potential. This paper presents the preliminary results of the chronological and typological study of the ceramics. A discussion on their technology, state of preservation, use and deterioration, observed on a representative number of restored specimens, is also provided, although further research is highly needed to verify the reliability of the current interpretation of the structure and function of this deposit.
