Abstract

This paper focuses on a funerary stele held by the Basel Museum of Ancient Art and Ludwig Collection. A stylistic inquiry has been undertaken. Although the fragmentary state of preservation complicates a reconstruction of the heavily damaged original scene, it is probable that the stele represented the male figure of an athlete with a pais, the latter rendered in three-quarter view on his left, holding an aryballos. The ionic carving style and the peculiar white-greyish marble suggest a Graeco-Oriental workshop. Despite its iconographical language is evidently inspired by Attic grave markers, the typological form and the decorations of the narrow listel are not typical of this region, but are attested on a slightly older stele from Samos. Certain parallels showing dependence from the great statuary of Praxiteles allow a stylistic dating between approx. 360 and 340 BC. Moving from the starting point, the author of this article formulates an original interpretation about the possible identity and the social status of several paides on classical attic semata, supporting his thesis with the Platonic dialogue «Lysis».
