Abstract

the study of a statuette of putto found in Melita (malta), so far unpublished, is the chance to evaluate the iconographic scheme of the infant holding a bunch of grapes and saving it from an animal, usually a cock. this type originated in the middle Hellenistic age for the representation of children and was afterwards emulated probably by roman workshops, to originate a ‘genre’ group with Amor as protagonist. like many analogous products, the statuette of Melita, that dates back between the half of the i and the first half of the ii century A.D., is supposed to be a decoration of one of the domus present in the city, which was the most important centre of the roman malta.
