Abstract

The paper deals with part of a Late Roman graveyard excavated in 2003-2004 by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Veneto just north of the ancient town of Altino. The burials are E-W and also N-S oriented. Male graves are more common than female ones. Many male skeletons show evidence of so-called anthropological ‘horseman syndrome’. The grave goods are attributed to a period comprised between the second half of the fourth and the early fifth century AD. They are represented mainly by east Germanic besides late Sarmatian and Elb-German elements. The graveyard is probably to be attributed to a group of warriors (horsemen) arrived in Altino during the second half of the fourth century AD.
