Abstract

This article deals with a fragmentary skyphos by a member of the Polygnotan Group, found in Populonia. On one side is the birth of Aphrodite, on the other a picture said by Beazley to be unexplained. As a comparison with a calyx-krater fragment in Tuebingen demonstrates, this scene shows the first meeting between Dionysos and Ariadne on Naxos.
