Abstract

Nel contributo si prende in esame il personale addetto alla cura dei giardini. La figura professionale è quella del topiarius, lo stilista ed organizzatore degli horti delle classi più abbienti in particolare nei primi due secoli dell’impero. I dati a disposizione sono essenzialmente di natura epigrafica con qualche informazione desunta dalle fonti scritte e si riferiscono principalmente all’Italia e alle grandi proprietà del Lazio e della Campania.

The paper examines the garden staff in Roman antiquity. The analyse is focused on the figure of the topiarius the stylist and organizer of the horti of the wealthier classes in particular in the first two centuries of the empire. The available data are essentially epigraphic with some information derived from written sources and refer mainly to Italy and to the great properties of Lazio and Campania.
